Discover the “District”
The historic San Gabriel Mission District encompasses Mission San Gabriel Arcángel – the second oldest building south of Monterey, the legendary San Gabriel Mission Playhouse, the Civic Center, San Gabriel Historical Museum, the Ramona Museum, Fine Arts Gallery and many other historic and cultural sites. The District has been designated by the National Parks Service, as an interpretive center for the De Anza National Historic Trail that runs from the Mexican border to San Francisco. The Mission District serves as the point of origin for the annual “Los Pobladores Walk to Los Angeles” commemorating the trek of 11 families and four soldiers who traveled from the San Gabriel Mission to found El Pueblo de la Reina de Los Angeles, today, the great metropolitan City of Los Angeles.
Step into history where the Los Angeles region began over 200 years ago. Follow in the footsteps of the Gabrielino-Tongva Indians and Spanish settlers and enjoy a glimpse of early California life. The beauty of the Mission church, its gardens and the adjacent historical sites create a rich cultural fabric attracting visitors, artists and history-lovers to the area. The Mission District provides entertainment, tourism, retailing and dining opportunities. Come tour the Old Mission, take the historic walk, experience entertainment at the legendary San Gabriel Mission Playhouse and enjoy a light meal or fine dining experience in one of the local restaurants. Come take part in the hospitality and spirit of historic San Gabriel, “Birthplace of the Los Angeles Region”. Meeting, auditorium and performing arts facilities are available for groups of 40 to 1,400. Numerous restaurant offerings and hotel accommodations are nearby.
